Gun safety: legislative updates & next meeting
News from the FL Legislature: Monday, Sept. 16th, 1-4pm, the FL Senate Infrastructure & Security Committee chaired by Sen. Tom Lee (Tampa) will devote their entire meeting to “mass attacks and targeted violence” with a review of recent legislation and expert testimony from the academic, law enforcement and mental health perspectives. Ed Hooper (N. Pinellas & Pasco) also serves on the committee. Agenda at http://www.flsenate.gov/Committees/Show/IS/ExpandedAgenda/4622
No public testimony will be taken and the hearing will be in Tallahassee but it’ll be televised on the FL Channel and LWV-FL will be there. The 2020 legislative session convenes January 14th.
News from Congress: As previously reported, the U.S. House is moving gun safety legislation to floor votes. FL Senator Marco Rubio published an op-ed in yesterday’s NY Times supporting the nationwide expansion of extreme risk protection orders (AKA red flag laws) as “A strong bipartisan path to tackle gun violence.” 145 chief executives from companies like Levi Strauss, Royal Caribbean and Bain Capital released a letter yesterday addressing the U.S. Senate: “doing nothing about American’s gun violence crisis is simply unacceptable.”
Join us as we prepare for the 2020 FL Legislative Session and work to reduce gun violence here in St. Petersburg, as well. Our next Gun Safety Action Team meeting is 7-8:30pm, Monday 23 Sept., Wesley Room, Allendale United Methodist Church.
