help tackle gun violence in the 2020 FL legislative session
The President of the FL Senate recently tasked Sen. Tom Lee (R-Tampa), chair of the Senate Infrastructure & Security Committee, with addressing gun violence in the 2020 FL Legislative Session. At their first meeting on 17 September, the committee heard expert testimony from those in a position to recommend effective legislative strategies. They essentially failed to do so, to the frustration of Sen. Lee and a number of committee members. Click here to see media reporting and here to read an editorial from the Tampa Bay Times.
Please consider contacting Sen. Lee to
* Thank him for his sincere interest in addressing gun violence in a meaningful way.
* Urge his committee’s serious consideration of SB94 (expansion of background checks) and SB114 (expansion of Risk Protection Orders) as two effective solutions. Both have broad public support, should garner non-partisan backing and are shown to be effective at reducing gun deaths & injuries. * Speak as a concerned citizen (not as a League member): express your personal concern about this issue. Suggested talking points: ask that the committee treat gun violence as a public health issue; note that with rights come responsibilities - a healthy balance is needed.
